New Load Monitoring Method Advances Digital Twin Development for the O2-X Tidal Turbine
Our partner, the Center for Wind Power Drives (CWD), has developed an innovative load-monitoring method that calculates hub-flange loads on Orbital Marine Power’s O2-X turbine using real measurement data. The method was presented at EWTEC 2025, the European scientific conference on wave and tidal energy.
Using simulation data, CWD trained regression models based on input variables that will also be available during real field operation of the turbine. This allows hub-flange loads to be accurately derived from operational measurement data, without the need for additional specialised sensors.
These load estimates will play a key role in building the drivetrain digital twin within the EURO-TIDES Tidal Array Project. By providing reliable load inputs for the digital twin, this new method will help improve performance monitoring, enhance reliability, and accelerate innovation across the tidal energy sector.
